It’s ‘Heroes National Stadium’ for Zambia’s new football arena thumbnail

The Government has back tracked on the naming of the new Lusaka stadium and have agreed to have it called the Heroes National Stadium.

FAZ president Kalusha Bwalya confirmed the development on his Tweeter handle after receiving the news from Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili.

“New Lusaka Stadium will be called ‘HEROES NATIONAL STADIUM’. Sports Minister Kambwili has just confirmed 2 me,” Tweeted Kalusha.

There was public uproar after the government announced that the new 50,000 seater stadium would be called the Gabon Disaster Heroes national stadium.

Kalusha, as would be many fans, was cheered by the development and congratulated the minister for the move.

“Congratulations & well done,” he tweeted.

The Heroes National Stadium is set to be completed in September this year and the contractor has asked government to give them the name so that it can be inscribed in the final touches of the construction.

I was suprised in the first place when Mr. Chishimba Kambwili declared the name for the newly built Lusaka Stadium and wondered what was wrong with us Zambians. I’m extremely grateful for renaming the stadium to the satisfaction of us many Fans and Soccer lovers. HEROES NATIONAL STADIUM: Well done and THanks so much for the gesture.

    AMEN!!!
Thanks mister minister. I don’t suppose you can go one better by tossing in a high profile OFFICIAL Opening game. Say a game against Argentina or U.S.A? Oh, while you are at it, please crack the whip and fire all the so-called “consultants” whom you consulted for the “disaster” name.
By the way, the correct reading of the new name should be “National Heroes Stadium” not “Heroes National Stadium”. Just the rules of grammar & adjectives. Unless someone makes sure the punctuation reads – “Heroes’ National Stadium” with the apostrophe next to the word “heroes” to make it infinitive. That lesson is free of charge. Just this once. Kekekeke

@ last I wonder who made the decision for him.
Better than that statement ati ‘Gabon ……’

  4. Sobongo on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 4:43 pm

Can we ever make sure the OFFICIAL OPENING is set for April 28th please? That would be most appropriate. Make sure we get a high profile opponent for that please.

Stadium name done and fixed-let us go back to plotting the fall of Ghana. Let us not over debate this as if the name of a stadium has ever scored goals anywhere.

  6. Mwiinga on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 5:00 pm

Good Stadium though i think the name needs to be revisited, heroes National Stadium sounds too plain and they say this is the Stadium they want to remember the gallant heroes by : The 30 Heroes Stadium was going to be better because i wonder what will come of this Stadiums name when the Government decides to set up Heroes Acre, with a name like 30 Heroes Stadium even an individual in Texas would easily know why the Stadium has that name but with the National Heroes Stadium they would think even political heroes are involved

At last our cry has been heard. From the word go ‘Heroes National Stadium’ has been on my mind since the uproar began concerning the naming of the Lusaka Stadium to Gabon Disaster Heroes National Stadium. It is in honour of our heroes who perished off the coastal shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Gabon, not freedom fighters. I congratulate all soccer analysts, soccer fans and the media for debating this issue and see to it that a good name is given and accepted as well appreciated by all.

Zambian fans can now sleep bcos they’ve gotten the name they wanted. I suggest they launch this stadium by engaging stobborn Sudan in friendly match.

  12. Mwiinga on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 5:12 pm

Stadiums like The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Memorial Stadium in the USA can easily be identified because even the name tells a brief story, The 30 Heroes Stadium was going to be a good name but we’ll just have to accept what has been decided upon

Its not a good name. heroes? which ones? a better name can be found

  28. Positive thinking on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 10:32 pm

Heroes Stadium is better than the previous name, but really it should have been “Heroes Memorial Stadium”

That way it would be specific to the players who perished. It shouldn’t be about winning AFCON 2012…kwati you wil never win it again.

  29. STUMPY on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 10:40 pm

Such a nice stadium with such a lame name.

  30. Amandla on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 11:42 pm

Thank you honorable minister. I reverse my words and when I become President I will not carry out my threats against you! Thank you for understanding the Zambian cry and your ability to listen to the electorate. Thank you Kalu and all Zambians who showed concern.

  31. Amandla on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 11:50 pm

Positive thinking yours is even closer if not the best of what we had desired but I doubt if the powers that be would change again for the second time retracting the name twice by backtracking on the name they had thought was right!

  32. Seen from afar on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 11:50 pm

Yaba, how do they just decide all of sudden like that. I happy and relieved it’s not “gabon disater” but atleast go through some sort of creative process.

You can also have: Heroes of 1993 National Stadium

There are allot of possibilities. Heroes National Stadium is good. Is it the right version, are we sure?

  33. Amandla on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 11:56 pm

Sobongo, I read you well! Unless you push for it I think the apostrophe may not appear in Heroes’ National Stadium! Please talk to the contractors and Zambian Engineers working with them since the Chinese (nothing negative) may miss this grammatical point.

  34. SoJC-SMM on Fri, 12th Jul 2013 11:58 pm

Good people this name is just great … we all know which heroes are targeted and people will still explain after us if the LORD tarries … Heroes National Stadium (HNS) is simply great … besides it was suggested by a good number of people … besides a dedication to the gallant sons of Zambia who perished in Gabon, it will also serve for other Heroes like Kalusha and many more, Katongo & Team and all other Heroes … appreciation shouldn’t just be in death but whilst living … for instance Kalu is a living Heroe and has has really done us proud since his true team mates left us on that day 28 April 1993 … GOD bless the Republic with greater joy in all spheres of life. SHALOM

  36. Keyala on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 2:14 am

Well done this was what we wanted not disaster what what uko. To u mr kambwili learn to be humble their wise u are on your way out of that position come next elections

This name suits the biggest stadium of the nation in the capital city I like that congrats Mr Sata for knowing that not all decisions u make can be nodded by everyone else.

But don’t threaten uo kambwili to be so arrogant to us just for the fear of u.

    Thanks

  38. mulondwe muzungu on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 5:31 am

What happens to the old independence stadium? Food for thought,I am just thinking when we as Africans will start building our own infrastructure. The Chinese and Asians have learnt from the west how to it and have transformed the skylines of their cities. Nearly 50 years after independence we still depend on outsiders to manage our companies, build our infrastructure and so on.

  39. Mulenga pulu on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 7:21 am

@sobongo THE PROBLEM WITH INVITING ARGENTINA OR BRAZÍ FOR THE OPENING MATCH OF THE STADIUM IS we ll lose the first match at the stadium kekeke hihihi SO WE WANT LESOTHO

  40. Eve on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 7:38 am

It’s still not making sense, it should have been called the ” National Heroes Stadium”.

  42. noyah on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 8:16 am

All of you saying this is a beautiful stadium are being naive. Don’t you watch world football? Does this compare with Wembley or Allianz Arena? I would settle for an exact copy of Olympia Stadion than this half baked monstrocity. It’s not like we were given the stadium free, it is a loan we have to pay back. We may as well have gone for broke and built quality but its too late now. I like the way Amsterdam Arena was built, check it out. There’re no holes to separate the stands from the roof, the seating goes down to pitch level and no running track. There’s a ground in Ndola which can host future Olympics, why have two? Lastly we should call it Rupiah Banda stadium or better FTJ stadium since we’ve started a trend of naming grounds after dead presidents.

  47. Mumbi on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 10:59 am

@Noyah, FTJ & RB were regarded as crooks thats y, too many corrupt charges. There Govt were not listening ones but look in a brink of an eye, they’ve shown humility. Congrats PF govt.

  48. D4 on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 11:02 am

This is not gramma we are doing here, we are naming a Stadium. Heroes National Stadium is just perfect. Forget the English jargon of which word should come first etc etc. It is a God given power that you have as a human being – to give a name to something and it shall be called as such. Once again, thumbs up to govt for listening to THE PEOPLE.

  49. Mumbi on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 11:21 am

Thats a football pitch, so its footballers only respected there not boxers or politicians as the later already have Chembe bridge, Ndola stadia & Lsk G hospital including the 3 airports. @ Mr Mwiinga, fairly is there anything wrong u are moderating in my earlier comment?

  50. noyah on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 11:51 am

@F-15 Not to dive too much in politics but if you were there when we took to the streets in joy at the removal of KK yet 20 years down the line nobody remembers how difficult he made life for Zambians and now there’s an airport named after him. No leader is perfect, you remember what they contributed and thank them for that. So RB or FTJ stadium/airport are around the corner. Should Zambia get afcon 2019 it will be focused along the line of rail for obvious logistical issues and mostly on the Copperbelt. Thats where the football fanatics of Zambia come from.

  51. Watch Over on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 12:13 pm

@noyah you are the one who’s been naive and unrealistic you can’t say this stadium is not beautiful -
Can you compare it to Nkolomo Stadium? Why comparing it to Amsterdam Arena/Wembley? Do you know the cost of Amsterdam Arena that can build another extra stadia of that nature? the cost of Amsterdam stadium is 140 euros and ours is about 71 euros.

Needless to say can’t compare the two nations (Zambia n neitherland’s) per capital income.
The will to build and Improve our stadia is welcome n will support so is every patriotic Zambian.

Please don’t mislead people here come back if u r not in Zambia n live a more realistic life.
Otherwise it’s a great stadium I hope we maintain it! You are the same people who don’t see anything good in African’s development

  52. mwaba;; on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 12:41 pm

Thats a great move, i thank the govt for this change, but for you ,A lot of names to give to one thing Zambians sure, It was Disaster, no, no, you complained, we want a word heroes in the name, they put heroes that no memories now and others debate which word to come first, huhhh!!, you people when will you just accept without complaining?

  53. Neutral on Sat, 13th Jul 2013 12:49 pm

The name is fine coz it was more pronounced on the net and Zedian papers. I was extremely worried coz the first name came when my first born daughter was a couple of days on earth! It would have bn bad to have a disastorous name conciding with the birth of my child! First Sudan had spoiled my party and thank God she delayed her coming to July to avoid the bad month of June. Now I “backfire” (bounce back) on ZamFoot!
